Meh...I have mixed emotions about this book. I was definitely NOT sucked in at any point--in fact, I was really just reading as fast as i could to get through it. The main character, Sophie is recovering from extremely poor treatment at the hands of a sadistic previous master. Though there is not a ton of detail about Sophie's time with Master Barry, the detail that is given is enough to tell me that Sophie gave up too much power to be his submissive and he took advantage of her. One example of Barry taking things too far involved her hands being nailed to the wall--yes, I said NAILED to the wall--and the only thing she had to say was that she was surprised at how little it bled and that it didn't leave a scar when it healed. WTF? I want to know why she wasn't thinking: I need to get the hell out of here!!! Quick!!What I did like about the book was that Sophie seemed to be in a better place mentally--with the help of Master Dave. A sub's state of mind is very intriguing to me and confusing... I don't want to give the entire story away, but I thought Joseph did a nice job of voicing the fact that giving yourself over to someone and submitting is rewarding if that is how you choose to live your life, but one should do so without being stupid. If your Dom wants to break your legs for instance, should you let him b/c he is your Dom or should you pack your shit and get the hell out? To me, the answer is obvious...but apparently the answer is not so clear to some subs.
